I met Hamidullah from Balochistan at the hot springs of Chitral, where he had come for a walk with his other schoolmates.


"We heard that people come here for treatment because it is known that there is healing in the water of this spring," said Hamidullah, who was sitting by the spring with his hands in the water.


According to the stories associated with this spring for centuries, bathing in its water cures joint pain and other ailments including jaundice. Iqbal Hussain was washing clothes in a small pool with a fountain. He, whose house was near the spring, told The Independent Urdu that he had jaundice, but his illness was cured by bathing in the spring and washing clothes here.


Water has also been supplied to a large mosque near the spring, which people use for ablutions. Similarly, baths have been built for bathing near the springs where people come for bathing for treatment while people rest in a nearby room after bathing so that the body temperature returns to normal.


A wall with fountains has also been set up for women to wash their clothes. Mehboob Alam, who is familiar with the area, said hardly anyone knows about the history of the spring, but it has been there for centuries.
